Pokémon Go: Information, Knowledge, & Lessons Learned

Pokémon GO Information

BASICS

  • Pikachu appears as a starter option if you ignore the first three choices four times by walking away.
  • Spinning the ball before throwing will provide some extra experience.
  • Landing the ball inside the narrowing circle will provide some extra experience based on how small the circle has narrowed.
  • Pokémon type frequent the terrain appropriate to them.
  • Freshly caught Pokémon have a light blue glow behind them for several hours.
  • It is better to level quicker at the start than it is to focus on which Pokémon is better.
  • Pokéstops replenish about every 5 minutes.

CP, HP, CANDY, & STARDUST

  • CP, combat power, is a general gauge of a Pokémon's prowess.
  • HP - duh.
  • Stardust is given when you capture a Pokémon, and hatching one gives more.
  • You also get Candy the same way.
  • It takes Candy and Stardust (I just call it dust) to power up Pokémon. Every power up increases CP and HP.

GYM BATTLES

  • ALL Gyms may be battled for XP.
  • You can Dodge in battles by swiping, attack by tapping, and special by holding.
  • Focus on a team that has type-attack advantage against theirs in gym battles; Highest CP =/= Best.
  • Anyone can place a Pokémon in a newly caught gym from the same team. First in gets a spot.
  • Pokémon with custom names are not seen by other players; every gym shows the generic name.

LURES, INCENSE, & XP

  • Everyone benefits from lures, but only you see the incense.
  • Moving around increases wild appearance while using incense.
  • Often, the same lured Pokémon will be seen by those in the area.
  • You can just be in the vicinity of an active lure to benefit.
  • Lucky eggs will also give experience bonuses to evolutions, so it save them for one big evolution party.

STATS, IV, & EVOLUTION

  • IV's are hidden stats which vary your Pokémon's ATT, DEF, & STA
  • IV numbers are whole numbers between 0-15.
  • Height and Weight are purely cosmetic and do NOT influence IV's.
  • Lured/Hatched have a higher chance for better IV scores.
  • Certain Pokémon have preferential IV scores; trending toward more ATT, DEF or STA.
  • Evolved Pokémon Retain their IV's.
  • IV's are what give variation to CP gained per level. See charts here for min/max/avg CP per level.
  • There is no difference between evolving or powering up first.
  • Evolved Pokémon Randomize Movesets.
  • Eevee's can be named before evolving to force a specific evolution.
Name Evolution
Sparky Jolteon
Rainer Vaporeon
Pyro Flareon
  • Eevee naming will only work while no other ones have that name. *(Maybe only once, ever. Confirmation Needed)

LEVELS
* Trainer levels are not the same as a Pokémon's level.
* Pokémon levels are not visible. (level =/= CP value)
* Max level of a Pokémon is (Trainer Level + 1) x 2.
* Some use a half level method, so don't multiply by 2. (I don't personally want to say my Pokémon is level 21.5 - I would say it is 43)
* There are several variations on what to call a 'level' around. The level facts listed are still true.
* Pokémon are ODD levels when caught AND never powered up.
* It always takes two or four power ups to reach the next dust price point on new captures.
* Using a known level of a Pokémon, you can check to see if they have the same curve as one you are unsure of. This will be harder at higher trainer levels because the degrees between arc points will narrow.

EGGS
* Eggs are dropped randomly from Pokéstops.
* You should have as many incubating as you can while walking or biking slowly.
* Anything faster will not register.
* If you are going for a long drive, then leave it up. Some stop & go will register.
* What will hatch are based on the eggs' distance required.
* Extra dust, XP, and candy come from hatchlings.
